For many busy Canadian families, an Au Pair can offer something a little different: flexible childcare, an extra pair of hands and the chance to welcome a young person from another country into the family.

1. Your Family Needs More Flexibility
Traditional childcare arrangements often work around fixed schedules.

However, an Au Pair should not be hired primarily as a housekeeper.
If your main need is heavy cleaning, extensive household management or professional-level childcare, another type of household employee may be more appropriate.
6. You Are Willing to Be a Fair and Responsible Employer
Canada does not have an official Au Pair program like other countries so Au Pairs must have legal work authorization to work in Canada.
Under no circumstances may an Au Pair work in Canada on a tourist visa, as this is strictly prohibited.
An Au Pair arrangement is not simply an informal cultural exchange. In Canada, an Au Pair performing childcare duties is working and must have legal authorization to work.
Host families should be prepared to follow applicable provincial employment standards, including wage and payroll requirements.
Families should also provide reasonable working hours, privacy, clear expectations and respectful communication.
Families receive valuable childcare support and greater flexibility, while the Au Pair should receive fair employment, guidance, respect and the opportunity to enjoy their experience living in Canada.
So, Is an Au Pair Right for Your Family?
An Au Pair can be a wonderful childcare option, but it is not right for every household.
It may be a particularly good fit if your family:

- would benefit from more help with daily routines
- is comfortable having someone live in the home
- enjoys the idea of cultural exchange
- is willing to train and communicate with a young person
- is committed to fair and legal employment practices
The goal is not simply to find someone to help with the children.
